G. Doctorow — Lev Tolstoy, 'Anna Karenina' and the group think of Western media heading us into WWIII

Tolstoy describes "war fever" in words that Gilbert Doctorow uses to compare with the neocons and liberal interventionists of today's America. Good read.

War fever has not spread to the general public. Maybe pictures of a blonde-haired 8 year old girl will finally sway public opinion?

In any case, the elites have "professional" armed forces to play with, who will obey their order to go to war.

Americans like short wars that can be won from the air, with quick mop up by special forces and proxies. They hate long wars of attrition. There are not many wars that can be won that way even against inferior but committed forces. Fighting Russia, China, or Iran is another matter and fighting Russia, China and Iran is yet another.

There is also the matter of national interest. Americans are OK with fighting for a clear national interest like defeating Communism. The media can demonize Putin all it ways and whip up humanitarian sentiment, but unless a war can be won quickly and cheaply, Americas are not gong to it it worth the candle in terms of national interest.

This is how empires overextend and implode.
