Miley Cyrus Releases Occupy Wall Street Song and Video
Popular music powerfully drives developing trends. This is the next iteration, and this time it is going to go viral on the Internet instead of with bands playing in the park. Woodstock will be on the Web.
Tom, this was something I have been looking for ie music.... finally.
ReplyDeleteBut Miley Cyrus?!?!?! Not cool!
;)
Seriously. Miley Cyrus?? The movement is doomed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a young people's countercultural revolution, Matt. We are supposed to not like it. :o
ReplyDeleteSociologically, protest is about the coming generations rejection of the institutional arrangements of the past.
It was like that in the Sixties and Seventies, too, remember. I think we are probably a lot more open than our elders were then.
So I guess have to get used to Miley and Lady Gaga and not expect Bob Dylan.
The significant point is that the popular music is starting to reflect a developing trend. It's popular music that is probably the most powerful carrier of an emerging Zeitgeist that will have an across-the-board impact socially, politically, and economically.
I don't think we can expect the rising generations to either follow in the footsteps of the past nor accept a future that they regard as aligned against their interests.
In the Sixties and Seventies, actually starting in the Fifties with the Best Generation poet, James Dean movies, etc, the predominant sociological and psychological theme was youth alienation.
Now that has changed. Youth is a lot more savvy now, having the previous cultural revolution to stand on, as well as having gone digital.
Moreover, "rude" is in. This is going to be a more "in your face" and no BS period. They want results, not explanation or excuse. And "wait your turn" isn't going to cut it, either.
My impressions in dealing with young people is that they have about zero respect for age and authority. In their view it has not only not served them well. It has grossly abused them.
Yeah, but everybody likes Lady Gaga.
ReplyDeleteMiley Cyrus is, well, the Billy Ray Cyrus of her generation.
Miley Cyrus/Lady Gaga popularity trend
ReplyDeletewho cares? as long as young people start to pay attention, that is what is important. tom morello(rage against the machine)did some stuff in wisconsin during the protest there.
ReplyDeleteI'd say she is being paid to co-op the movement and give it the boxer's hug so as to stage a pause if not a distraction.
ReplyDeleteShe'll take it to the web and soften it up, dilution
