NICOLE GLENNON - Ditch the tea, take Vitamin D: New diet advice for over 65s

Ditch the tea at mealtimes? That won't be easy after a lifetime of enjoying a cuppa after a meal. I bought some nice Red Bush (Roibos) tea the other day, though, which is said not to affect mineral absorption. Anyway, I'm not 65 yet, although not long to go.

This is to maintain muscle and bone density.

Adults aged 65 and above have been advised to avoid consuming tea with meals, start taking a Vitamin D supplement and eat a more protein-dense diet to stimulate muscle growth.

Written by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s (FSAI) Scientific Committee at the request of the Department of Health, the updated national recommendations are designed to help “enhance older people’s nutritional well-being with the ultimate aim of improving health in later life.”

  1. Speaking of Ireland, I've been bing watching "Bridget and Eoman", whom I've just discovered, no thanks to you, kv.

  2. It’s the caffeine that is the culprit. So after a meal, wait at least 30 minutes before drinking tea or coffee.

    Roibos has no caffeine.

Greek mountain “tea” has no caffeine.

Caffeine affects people differently. Me, it makes me drowsy. Yes, I have it in the morning, but that is because I like the taste and nothing to do with needing a jolt to wake up :)

Vitamin D should be taken in the morning with a meal. In the morning, just like the rays of the sun :)

  4. Caffein is a must. Otherwise it’s waste of water.

  8. S400, anxious this morning, are we? ;)

Why does coffee make me anxious while others can drink it before bed?
