I have often said that Jeffrey Sachs's heart is the right place, but he has the economics all wrong. But this is chiefly a political analysis, and Sachs get it right. Both the GOP and Democratic positions are poison, and only a third element can resolve this impasse resulting from the two political parties bowing to big donor wishes for increased privilege.
Only a big political realignment, perhaps spurred by a third party bold enough to campaign on free social media rather than expensive television advertising, is likely to break the status quo. Until then, the demise of public goods and services will continue apace. The Financial Times | Opinion
