Jack Peat — Rough Sleepers Could Face Fines of up to £1,000 in Affluent Borough

I have talked to some homeless people, and one of the biggest problems they report is not lack of a home or money, but lack of space. They are not allowed to occupy space and must keep moving, even at night.

And I was just reading in the local paper that proposals to build affordable housing are running to the problem of NIMBY (not in my backyard).

The mark of an immature society is the wish that problems just go away.

  1. The main motivation of laws like this is to protect property prices. I would guess that a majority of Londoners would vote for this law if they thought what would happen to the price of their own property if there was a beggar in a tent on the pavement outside...

Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field,
Until there is no more room,
So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!
In my ears the Lord of hosts has sworn, “Surely, many houses shall become desolate,
Even great and fine ones, without occupants.

The inherent injustice of government subsidized private credit creation is rarely addressed so the public is apt to think the poor are only getting what they deserve.
