Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner has signaled to White House officials that he’s considering leaving the administration after PresidentBarack Obama reaches an agreement with Congress to raise the national debt limit, according to three people familiar with the matter.Geithner hasn’t made a final decision and won’t do so until the debt ceiling issue has been resolved, according to one of the people. All spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about private discussions.
That would be two down with Larry Summers gone.
UPDATE: Geithner denies the rumor.
UPDATE 2: Geithner waffles.
I guess he wants to get out and start making serious money in the financial sector whose effective regulation he has fought.
ReplyDeleteWill I still be able to buy FDA inspected produce poultry and meat even when the government stops paying employees of this department ?
ReplyDeleteor will the e coli just get us all ?
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen every movie, but Godzilla always leaves Tokyo. After much mayhem and destruction, of course.
ReplyDeleteWhen Geithner's work is done, he will leave.
Any guesses as to serious candidates to replace him? (Not a wish list but actual people whom you think would be heavily considered.)
ReplyDeleteHe can't leave soon enough. Why wait until after the debt limit hostage situation?
ReplyDeleteWe need someone else in there now, who understands the deficit and debt should really be among the last problems on our minds right now.
Geithner is a catastrophically bad choice, for any position in government. Gotta love how the failed president brought him, Summers, and Rubin into the huddle from the beginning.
Crake,
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if Obama chose Evan Koenig, Lloyd Blankfein, or even Larry Kudlow. I have little confidence in his economic decision making.
