The full mechanics of money supply endogeneity seem to be one of the remaining mysteries of macroeconomics. As I have explored for a couple years now (see for example the most recent two posts, A Visual Guide to Endogenous Money and the Failure of QE and Kaldor on Money Supply Endogeneity) there appears to be a truly remarkable layer of money supply dynamism that even most modern Post Keynesians fail to discuss. (And the mainstream of course remains hopelessly unaware, stuck on inapplicable theories like IS/LM that treat financial assets like commodities!)
Banks Dominate Euro Area Lending because of the Low Ratio of Short Maturity Government Debt
by hbl
hbl, if you read this (or anyone else), since you are so website interactive savvy, would you consider making a widget for a 'National SAVINGS Clock'? Perhaps including the sectoral balances equation? With say links to 7DIF or your own tutorials? Like an MMT badge of sorts for blogs...would that be difficult? I'm thinking something like this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ourfiscalfuture.org/debt-clock-widget-available/
Actually this may be a better example since you can see all the code:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.publicagenda.org/pages/get-widgets
I mean even *I* can figure out how to change the title, images, and redirect the links. In fact, I think I will. Is this what they call hacking? ;)
Trixie,
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Yes it shouldn't be too difficult to create a widget like that. Re-using is definitely faster than starting from scratch, but may or may not be OK to do.
Visual design would matter though, and I'm not much good there.
Happy hacking if you take it on! :) If not, I'll check into it a bit more closely when I get a chance.
hbl, I did it! I didn't feel like figuring out how to get rid of the puke green color and think I got the formula wrong. Jealous? But hey, if you want to nit pick, you'll find fault with anything. It's on my very small and rarely updated personal blog:
ReplyDeletehttp://hitormiss.yolasite.com/hit-or-miss.php
And I can only HOPE it wasn't "ok" to re-use. :)
Trix,
ReplyDeleteThe best!
Please contact Michael at Warren's blog as Warren has always said he
wanted to put that widget on his blog...
GREAT JOB!!!
Resp,
hey Trix here is a link to a html color chart if you want to change from the puke green:

resp,
Trixie,
ReplyDeleteNicely done!! I like it!
I think linking to 7DIF is great, but going straight to a PDF might cause some people to click 'cancel' since most browsers throw up a file open/save dialog for PDFs. But the 7DIF blog post has extra baggage too so I'm not sure that's ideal either... I wonder if a custom landing page/gateway page on the way to 7DIF might be ideal. Not sure.
Also you could consider two variations -- one with the top half included and one without -- as certain audiences might benefit from the sectoral balances equation while other audiences might be intimidated by it. Just a thought, feel free to disagree.
Actually scratch that PDF comment, I guess the browser default usually is to open PDFs right away, so what you have should work well.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the blog, Trixie! Love it!!
ReplyDeleteHey, you're in my neck of the woods!
Thanks for the feedback all!
ReplyDeletehbl, yeah, opening to a pdf would be bad. I use Chrome and it opens straight away. My concern was that the first page was blank...THAT would lose someone like me who couldn't be bothered to page down. Fortunately most ppl aren't like me. I will test in other browsers though.
And I definitely agree re: SBE. It's really overrated since most ppl won't have a clue what it means unless you're well-versed in the subject matter. It will get 86d since it's nothing more than showing off. I think some catchy tagline is much more effective. I grabbed Mosler's line about taxes, but it could say anything given it's just an image I created in MS Paint.
What I will do is post the HTML code here and where to make modifications (want to test changing background colors with Matt's link first). It is SUPER easy to customize if anyone wants to use...changing image, links, fonts, etc.

ReplyDeleteChrome is convenient that way. Has a PDF reader built in, as well as Flash. Keeps 'em updated automatically, so fewer issues about security from running outdated Adobe software.
Folks, a good extension for Chrome is "Flash Control". Keeps flash-based ads from running automatically. Turns out flash-based advertising is a vector for malware attacks these days. People have even gotten infections from the ads that show up on the side of of even major sites like MSN.COM, NYT.COM, etc. It's called "Malvertising". You don't even have to click on the ads; if they display, that's enough to get an infection. If you don't use Chrome, make sure your Flash and Adobe Reader have the latest updates installed. You can also get flash blockers for Firefox. Pretty easy to work with, if you actually want to watch something in Flash, just click on the item and it will play.
I removed the top image and replaced it with new and hip NEP logo. Still links to 7DIF. Like hbl mentions above, I'm not very good with visual design, but I think it looks pretty nifty now.
ReplyDeleteHere's the final HTML code:
<table width="160" height="75" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
<tr><td>
<a href="http://moslereconomics.com/wp-content/powerpoints/7DIF.pdf" alt="MMT: Mondern Monetary Theory" title="MMT: Modern Monetary Theory" target="blank"><img src="resources/NEP_MMT_Logo.jpg?timestamp=1332989419454" style="width: 220px; height: 60px;" border="0"></a>
</td>
</tr>
<tr bgcolor="#000000"><td height="1" bgcolor="#000000"></td></tr>
<tr bgcolor="#00FFCC">
<td align="center" bgcolor="#cf7f0c">
<table id="zDebtBox" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="padding: 3px 0 3px 0;">
<tr>
<td align="center"><a href="http://moslereconomics.com/wp-content/powerpoints/7DIF.pdf" alt="MMT: Mondern Monetary Theory" title="MMT: Modern Monetary Theory" id="zf05" target="blank" style="color:#000000; font: bold 13px Arial, sans-serif;">US National SAVINGS Clock</a></td>
</tr>
<tr bgcolor="#cf7f0c"><td align="center">
<script type="text/javascript">
var zFontColor = "#000000"; // Debt Value Color
var zFontSize = 18;// Debt Font Size
var zSpeed=4;
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.publicagenda.org/facingup/clocks2/debt2.js"></script>
</td>
</tr></table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
Gives me a warm feeling inside. Like money in the bank.
