China’s courting of Latin America and the Caribbean – signaled anew this week by a visit by its president – is prodding the United States to step up its outreach to the rapidly emerging economies, which are showing greater global clout....

“The honeymoon is over and it’s a good time for us to reassert a presence, but we have to come up with something a little more creative without the U.S. having deep pockets,” Gallagher said. 1. China offers to build the third world infrastructure/industry in exchange for their resources. offering a nationalist style imperialism.

The U.S. offers IMF structural adjustments. Support of right wing juntas. enriching a small ruling class to implement local austerity. Keeping countries in dollar denominated debt, so they must compete to export to U.S. Offering a British colonial dependence style of imperialism.

It's obvious which is better for the world in general. The U.S. imperial system is rapidly being replaced by china's . The U.S. can either adapt and compete in a development system or war with china. Unfortunately the U.S. ruling class would rather war.

  2. Yeah I'm working in North Africa right now and really can see what miller B is describing regarding western imperialism (not only US, even if mainly) vs. Asian imperialism.

About time there were some competing models and the exorbitant american privileges start to disappear.
