So far, the Chinese government has managed to ride the proverbial tiger of nationalism without being thrown. But the global community should not be fooled by the recent calm. With several hundred million Internet and cell phone users and the rapid growth of social media, which often spreads nationalist sentiment far and fast, it's becoming more difficult for China to say "no" to nationalist protests. A public reared on patriotic education and determined to restore China's standing in the world -- whether under this government or another one -- is not as predictable or firmly under party control as outsiders might imagine.Foreign Policy
