Michael McAuliff — Bernie Sanders Got Republicans To Make His Argument For Universal Health Care

Hit them on competitiveness, they don't understand compassion.

But Bernie hasn't yet brought out the big guns — the MMT principles showing that "affordability" is never the issue when real resources are available.

  1. Health care has more 1%ers than any other industry. The 1% are >=748,000 in real and financial assets. Most physicians are in the .01% of wealthy in the world. These are a great example of the people we talk about when we talk about the growing divide between haves and have nots.

  2. At least physicians actually provide something constructive rather than just shuffle papers. Not to say that US physicians don't enjoy significant rents owing to entry barriers that have been erected on their behalf and inadequate public policy in providing training commensurate with societal need. But physicians are not the gazillionaires either.

  3. All true. And socialized medicine would probably help to keep salaries from rising faster than the rest of society. Which is also why we probably have very little chance of reigning in the medical 1%ers anytime soon. They own congress.

  4. And let's not forget that Universal Health Care for all citizens is a solved problem in the rest of the world.

A bit like the Metric system of weights and measures.

  5. The doctors are the poorest of the wealthy. But also the most numerous of the wealthy. 900,000 doctors. Only 500 billionaires in the US. Canadian doctors average CAD $300,000/yr. UK NHS docs start at 26,000 GBP and top out at around 100,000 GBP
