Tony Cartalucci
Tony makes a good point about the American hypocrisy of supporting intervention in Yemen but not Russian intervention in Ukraine:
ReplyDeletethe West insisted that Russia had and still has no mandate to intervene in any way in neighboring Ukraine. Ukraine’s affairs, the United States insists, are the Ukrainians’ to determine. Clearly, the US meant this only in as far as Ukrainians determined things in ways that suited US interests.
This is ever more evident now in Yemen, where the Yemeni people are not being allowed to determine their own affairs.
Most Americans don't realize that much of the world is still tribal and many national boundaries are artificial constructs often imposed by the powerful of the past for their own convenience. As a result, American tend to think of these states as much more homogenous than they are. Americans also tend to project themselves and their mindset and value on the rest of the world based on the relative isolation of "island" America. The result is a thorough-going misunderstanding of the dynamics in play in these key areas — Central Asia and MENA, for example, whose major unifying bond is Islam, but with important (to them) sectarian differences leading to conflict. But it is not just affiliation with Islam that drives difference and conflict, either, and the roots of these differences are ancient.
ReplyDeletePowerful countries often act cynically using these differences and conflicts to push their own regional and geopolitical-geostrategic agendas. As a result the propaganda is both hypocritical and contradictory.
