TeleSur — Ecuador's Correa Calls For Defence of Democracy Against Threat

The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, reiterated Saturday that there is a plan underway to overthrow the elected government, and called on his supporters to defend the achievements of the Citizen’s Revolution against the destabilizing attempts of the right.
“Be aware, there is a coup underway. Be aware, because I insist, we are the immense peaceful majority, but we are going to defend our revolution and the moment they want to touch the president of the national government: everyone to the street, to defend what we have achieved,” he said.
During his weekly televised address, Correa called on Ecuadoreans to defend the democratic process, after more than 10 days of anti-government protests in Quito.
At the same time, the president warned that “we are peaceful people, but do not play with the patience of the people, you few oligarchs who want to return to the past. You will find the people more united than ever.”
Furthermore, Correa said that the right were attempting to achieve through destabilizing actions what they could not in the ballot box and that the opposition was afraid.
“The greatest social sin of our Latin America is inequality, and we face a massive campaign of disinformation, to the point of exhaustion, and manipulation by the opposition,” he added.
The opposition is protesting two tax bills, one taxing capital gains and the other inheritance, that are before the legislature. President Correa has postponed the vote.

The opposition is claiming that that the inheritance tax will "destroy the family". Read "destroy the dynasties".
