Portugal's anti-austerity Left take power in watershed moment for the euro

No one is expecting anything from the left this time. Forces against still looking too powerful.
ReplyDeleteIs there democracy in Portugal? Who is in charge, the President or parliament?
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. Paul Craig Roberts demolishes libertarianism and Stefan Molyneux. It's what I have often argued with libertarians that the government is controlled by the ruling class, not the people, and always has been. The government has always been run by the mega rich, from the kings and the aristocracy of old Europe, back to the Romans and before that. The answer is more democracy, not less.
ReplyDeleteThis is Paul's title to the debate, it's not mine.

Is there democracy in Portugal? Who is in charge, the President or parliament?
ReplyDeleteThis is another paradox of liberalism. The system of checks and balances can leave it unclear who is in charge, leading to constitutional crisis.
The US is subject to similar ambiguity even though it is not parliamentary.
In Canada we're parliamentary and we don't have a meddlesome president. Power rests with the Prime Minister and the PMO (Prime Minister's Office). Crystal clear to us.

Wonderful interview. Take down of two Libertarian narratives.
Portugal needs leadership with balls, not only willing, but hell bent on exiting the euro. There will be nothing but start-stops, stagnation, and decay until the euro is destroyed. Working people need to stand up for themselves.
ReplyDeleteBalanced budgets dont work, they simply can't work. Math rules them out.
