According to Maduro, Obama’s latest comments will be interpreted as a call to depose his government by the emboldened rightwing opposition, who announced their intention to force the president from office via referendum or constitutional reform earlier this month.
“This is directly meddled up in the coup attempts to change a legitimate constitutional government… in an absolutely independent Republic such as our Bolivarian homeland… violating international law and with no reason or moral motive,” lamented the president.
“It is a green light for the terrorist madness of the Venezuelan opposition,” said the head of state, referring to the violent opposition protests of 2014 which left 43 people dead.…
Nicholas Maduro is the democratically elected president of Venezuela.
He was also joined in his criticism by Venezuela’s foreign ministry, which released a statement condemning the US president’s comments.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the declarations of the United States president as blatant interference in the political life of our homeland, and openly inciting violent sectors to overthrow the constitutional and legitimate government of President Nicolas Maduro,” read the official communique dated March 15th.

ReplyDeleteThe Bolivarian "revolution", brought down by cheap oil - what a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteBlame the US because you are incompetent...
ReplyDeleteMatt, there is no such thing as "the US" when it comes to politics. The American people have absolutely no idea what is really going on, not with what passes for news and information. For "US" read powerful financial, energy, military and other corporate interests who control Washington.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, when not so long ago there were unsuccessful coups in Venezuela and Bolivia that were traced back to Washington, was that fault of the "the US"? By your definition, it would have been. You can't have it both ways. And what should be done about Washington's acts of state terrorism?
Blame the US because you are incompetent...
ReplyDeleteExcept the US has been "managing" Latin American affairs for decades if not centuries. Not that incompetence is not involved, but that is somewhat irrelevant. The "managed" a coup against Chavez when the economy was doing OK in comparison to now.
HRC's correspondence shows that she was embroiled in the recent Honduran coup that put the oligarchy back in power.
Ecuador's president has just called out the US for working to overthrow "leftists" government in Latin America when they come to power legitimately.
Hello. Anyone see a pattern here?
Tom, "embroiled" is putting it very kindly. Washington helped organise and direct the coup. That is, it was guilty yet again of at the very least of state terrorism. None of that matters, apparently. History too is irrelevant. As soon as there is a whiff of corruption and incompetence, it is damning proof of the irrelevance of decades of Washington-backed dictatorships and history. How convenient.
ReplyDeleteIf things were working well down there economically the left would have no problems politically...
ReplyDeleteThey have had the advantage of over 10 years of $bazillions of free oil rent from the US consumers and the place is still a basket case...
The left has been in charge down there for over 10 years that is enough time to get your program up and running...
Venezuela is not a basket case & is much better off than before. The left governments delivered great benefits to the people of Venezuela. But adopting some parts of insanestream economics - adroitly identified by the ignorant, stupid or malicious as "more progressive, more socialist" - proved to be, as usual a weapon of mass destruction aimed against itself.
