Two approaches..

Tim McGraw's latest "Humble" here:

David Bowie's "Heroes" here:

I'll take Bowie's (RIP David!!!! HUGE loss for mankind...HUGE!...)  approach I'm sorry...

PS: Neither would EVER get picked on "The Voice"... but two really substantial artists...

  1. Actually, I think Matt is very close to an essential problem here.

People say ‘follow the money’ – but the real signifier is ‘follow the ego’.

There are 7B egos on this planet, all wanting something, all expressing something – and psychology is essentially, understanding the forces and energies playing through these egos, and their personalities or ‘appearances’ through which they express: - dramatic players all, on the stage of life. It would be illuminating for researchers to investigate the evolution of the ego through stages of dormancy, animal-physical, physical-emotional, emotional, emotional-mass-mental, mental-aspirational, mystics-unpolarised, occultists - polarised with a Knowledge of the Self: - and the sound advice of Masters.

People lack the discrimination to distinguish between the persona (masking the individuality, ego, or ‘I’) - which in turn masks the true Ego, Self or Consciousness - and is in turn an outpost or mask, of Being (as far as I am concerned). All are blended in the mind – psychopathologies persist hidden from view, in surprising places. Everyone focuses on events, and concepts, but not the qualities and evolutionary status of the Egos and by reflection, the ‘I’s that construct these events, writing the script each day.

A ‘particle’ carries a ‘charge’ which in turn manifests a ‘force’ – but no one knows (like gravity) where the ‘charge’ comes from. These unknown charges pulse, and operate your heart, respiration, and brain transponder, rhythmically and faithfully, every moment of your life – and wheel the stars throughout the heavens. Different ‘charges’ are called relatively positive and negative, but they may as well be called red and blue. But scientists like the idea of positive and negative, and declare particles give rise (inexplicably) to not only ‘charge and force’ (whatever they actually are and however they breathe and pulse) - but lo and behold, to magical combinations of universal atoms in the human brain - mysteriously ‘exuding’ the perplexity of consciousness, and sense of self. Swallow an m&m and their self just changed. Hello new-born chocolate lovers ...!

Alternatively, the perennial wisdom through inner vision, declared the first four layers of the physical universe as etheric (the visible three they labelled gaseous, liquid, dense physical. Eastern physiology places the nadis (etheric channels) as the real scaffold of the human body, though which finer bodies (energies) of man express themselves, and around which (nadis) particles or matter collect – which is just as good a Theory. When Na cations gather around voltage gated channels in the neurons and spread along the cell membranes, it is because of precipitated energy flows in the Nadis.

I think a consideration of what ‘I’s actually express is way overdue. Like in Bowie or McGraw - what do they want? What energies of the Ego; and forces of mind, emotion, and physical force, do they express? There are basically seven types of Ego in Tibetan esotericism, found on seven ‘Rays’ or energy streams, three of aspect and four of attribute: - the lower bodies of mind, emotion and dense physical are also found on these Rays. Rays may be expressed in a ‘good’ way in the human persona or in a ‘bad’ way. For example, the first Ray of Power on which is found the political expression (statesmanship and foreign diplomacy) of man appears in the persona as:

Special Virtues: Strength, courage, steadfastness, truthfulness arising from absolute fearlessness, power of ruling, capacity to grasp great questions in a large-minded way, and of handling men and measures.
Vices of Ray: Pride, ambition, wilfulness, hardness, arrogance, desire to control others, obstinacy, anger.
Virtues to be acquired: Tenderness, humility, sympathy, tolerance, patience.

In humanity, some Egos develop in their personalities above the masses, the second Ray power of magnetism, attraction, and radiation (like Bowie). This is also the Ray of religion and philosophy in man. This second Ray of Love-Wisdom appears in the persona as:

Special Virtues: Calm, strength, patience and endurance, love of truth, faithfulness, intuition, clear intelligence, and serene temper.
Vices of Ray: Over-absorption in study, coldness, indifference to others, contempt of mental limitations in others.
Virtues to be acquired: Love, compassion, unselfishness, energy.

Watching that video I saw an ‘I’ focused on wanting people to like him; feeding off adulation and wanting others to experience the same ‘high’ (because he knows it lifts everyone). “We can be heroes – if only for a day”. However, this is an experience, an excitation of the ‘I’ – not the Ego. You will notice above that the Ego bestows serenity and calm, peace and clarity on the persona – not the forces and miasma of excited emotion. So, Bowie recognises the high is conditional. So, bound, hand and foot. His intelligence and senses servants to the experience, bending the magnetic, attractive and radiant power of the Self (a self-conscious unit of energy) to personality ends. He knew - people are experiencing machines and people want to experience. And yet willing to share, because the Ego knows true Bliss is a universal experience. This, I humbly suggest, is how events on the world stage should be analysed.

Other egos seek the expression of power; some love to learn and teach and build; some love the active intelligence and communion in every atom of life and consciousness; some beauty and harmony; some concrete knowledge; some ideals and aspiration; some organisation and the magic of forms. Every personality, every social phenomenon such as politics, religion and knowledge, every event on the face of this earth is a woven veil of these energies, and each Self is a focused expression of just one; mind, the intellect and the ‘I’ are their imperfect, evolving, reflections and expressions. Selflessness is the disappearance of the wave-form of the ‘I’ from out of the mind-stuff because it is no longer needed in evolutionary terms.

Hence, for me, both the wise advice to be humble and kind (let the ‘I’ be just a point of consciousness) and the wise recognition that ‘we can be heroes - if only for a day’ lead to awareness or consciousness. The ‘I’ is the LION, that after it has fully developed all of its physical, emotional and mental capability, rules the jungle of human livelihood and enjoys power for a day - but knows in its heart it is incomplete; eventually turning its back on the life of the persona and wandering out into the desert to fade away, until all that is left is its tail (?). Then it finds its heart. No capability is lost, but the energy flow that once went to the ‘I’ is reversed and a new path leading within and above becomes the reality. That is why Bowie and McGraw sing the same song, if you know how to listen. This, for me, is human history, and the real story of what is going on in this world. Next time you vote for a political candidate, check out the ‘I’ and its use of energy: - people who slaughter other human beings for a ‘cause’ do not understand human life; nor have they evolved to a stage where they are responsible (other than through karma).

To complete the Rays of Aspect I will list the Third Ray of Higher Mind or Active Intelligence, as this energy involves, evokes, and evolves, the persona:

Special Virtues: Wide views on all abstract questions, sincerity of purpose, clear intellect, capacity for concentration on philosophic studies, patience, caution, absence of the tendency to worry himself or others over trifles.
Vices of Ray: Intellectual pride, coldness, isolation, inaccuracy in details, absent-mindedness, obstinacy, selfishness, overmuch criticism of others.
Virtues to be acquired: Sympathy, tolerance, devotion, accuracy, energy and common sense.
