Jon Schwarz — Pentagon Official Once Told Morley Safer That Reporters Who Believe the Government Are “Stupid”

Duh.

Independent journalist I. F. Stone showed this decades ago.

I'd say this is a must-read, but if you don't already know and agree, you will think that this is anti-government propaganda.

But at least read the remarks of Arthur Sylvester, assistant secretary of defense for public affairs during the Vietnamese conflict. It's pretty shocking, even if you are jaded. I was serving on active duty in the theater at that time, and I came to that conclusion on my own. But that's when we actually had real reporters in the US media instead of people whose function is to deliver the daily message they are provided with.

  1. Government sources and releases get reported word for word usually. But they aren't authoritative and should be checked. Worse, the US government gags employees from using media in the way most people do personally and professionally.
