Ok I don't get this at all... If I was over there I would be headed to pubs tonight to celebrate, not that I'm a millenial (or boomer...). Can our UK readers weigh in this headline seems like BS to me; boomers have caused all the current chaos imo.
Best part about the Brexit is the deluge of photos featuring horrified Britons at pubs https://t.co/3hCkpZQJdX

Matt people is clueless... But Millenials voted majorly for remaining and boomers for Brexit (apparently according to some polls, can't confirm).
ReplyDeleteIs world upside-down, I'm about to become a believer on chemtrails conspiracy theories as we are approaching peak stupidity on planet Earth.
On a serious note, there is a sense of despair from the left (which includes majority of millenials) that they cannot get political reform and action from their own sovereign institutions voting whoever they want in. So the EU was the last hope of some countering force within the UK.
The logical fallacy is thinking that neoliberal vs. neoliebral fighting will give you less neoliberal outcome.
In any case, in the case of Scotland they may just leave the union instead of being ruled by neolibs in London.
A big problem the UK has comes from being so dependent economically on the City. Nothing's going to happen without reforming the City, and actual reform would kill the goose that lays the golden egg as the financial (crime) capital of the world. Many of the tax havens are also British. This is a huge pile of rent.
ReplyDeleteYeah but Tom I dont get the generational take here... idk about over there but over here the millenials are F'ed ... i think this lede has to be BS.... otoh a lot of millenials over here seem anti-Trump so who knows... I wont pretend to understand the left...
ReplyDeleteYou have to see this video by Mark Blyth - Mark Blyth on the Brexit vote
ReplyDeleteMark Blyth: "The Hamptons is not a defensible position...Eventually people will come for you."
ReplyDeleteYep, that was awesome.
DeleteThere is a perceived anti immigrant sentiment that is part of the leave vote that younger people are against. I also think young intellectuals think that this is a step back from an EU of the future that would have monetary and fiscal authority.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting generational apartheid and civil war. Young are now loaded with student soft debt renting in sub graduate jobs unable to afford to buy homes with a deliberately underfunded and demoralised health and education crappy expensive public infrastructure but wrinklies grey vote is relatively cuddled...What's not to love?

ReplyDeleteBlyth nails it imo ... 'Global Trumpism'.... Basic problem is China...
ReplyDeleteTwo big problem nations globally, China wrt economics and Iran wrt terror... Those two are the cause of 99% of world's present problems...
While Matt Franko is the source of 1% of the world's problems
ReplyDeleteBob what the hell is the govt of China doing buying US Smithfield Foods?
ReplyDeleteIts the public policy of China to make sure a premier supplier of Virginia hams and bacon/barbecue to the US mid-Atlantic region is being well operated for its customers around here?
They are all like sicko US corporate class wannabes and USD balance obsessed zombies...
What the hell is wrong with those people? You've got people over there eating dog brain soup and all these people can do is buy the common stock of an old line US pork products firm? That's all they can come up with?
Now they come up with "the worlds fastest computer!" wow big deal arent you zombies great! what are they going to use it for? figuring out which US firms they can buy represent the best value for the current stock price?
And then our morons put our nation in competition with these damaged goods?
"And then our morons put our nation in competition with these damaged goods?"
ReplyDeleteThat's the source of the causality. The Chinese wield no power outside of China, if the current crooks in charge didn't want to. Do you think they let western corporations go around China doing corporate buyouts just like that? Current western elites are stuuuuuupid, shortsighted and blind from greed and obsession with money and looting.
It's the same for Iran, which is a drop of water in the ocean compared to other Middle East failures. But all of them have the same source: failed Western foreign policy, again due to same causes.
Now they come up with "the worlds fastest computer!" wow big deal arent you zombies great! what are they going to use it for?
ReplyDeleteBuild state of the art military technology that is capable of neutralizing the US and its allies.
The US knows that is just a matter of time before China and Russia present an unsurmountable challenge and the window or opportunity to attack them is closing fast if it is open still.
The chances of nuclear destruction are very high, and it's probable that the US global intelligence and command and control system based on satellites would disappear in the first minutes. US carriers are already vulnerable to nuclear-tipped anti-ship missiles.
Computing power makes a huge difference, and technological independence is a wild card.
Bob what the hell is the govt of China doing buying US Smithfield Foods?
ReplyDeletePork is the favorite food of Chinese. Now that some many can afford it, they can't get enough of it.
Smithfield ham is considered a luxury item in China, like high end furniture made in North Carolina, most of which goes now to China while ordinary furniture in the US is mostly imported from China.
The other matter is that foreign investment and trade are two-way streets. There needs to be at least then appearance of reciprocity to work deal. The US can't shut china out of investing in the US, but it can and does limit what Chinese interests can buy or invests in, as China does also with the ROW.
ReplyDeleteChinese ownership of Smithfield has zero impact on the US economy and national security.
