Not sure that the "neo" in "neoliberalism"is well understood. Classical liberalism was based on economic liberalism's laissez-faire, which sought to remove the influence of government from economic and financial affairs. It resembles contemporary Libertarianism.
Neoliberalism arose when the business and financial communities realized that it was not only impossible to remove government from economic and financial affairs, so government needed to be owned by business and financial interests. This is the basis for the Chamber of Commerce, for example. The Chamber is supposed to represent business interests including "small business," but it is an organ of big business.
The upshot of neoliberalism as business and financial interests controlling the levers of government and holding the reins of power is government capture though campaign finance, lobbying and the revolving door.
The emails reveal the Clintons as major players in this game. It is legal because in the US to prove corruption there must be quid pro quo aka "money passing under the table." Citizens United made giving what otherwise might be considered bribes or at least conflict of interest, "free speech."
Of course, this is all happened coincidentally and no one involved knew what was really going down.
I've been searching them for a while now looking for evidence of the vast "neoliberal conspiracy!" and haven't found any...
