The US/NATO is still in Afghanistan going two decades now with no end in sight. They can't withdraw or the Taliban will take over again, which would be a defeat for the US and NATO by another rag-tag bunch like Vietnam. And if they stay, will bleed blood and treasure indefinitely with little to nothing to show for it.

The plan was/is to partition Syria. That is the situation in Iraq. It doesn't require too many boots on the ground, from what can be observed so far. Washington's plan is described as managed chaos.
