Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel is prepared to intervene in Syria to counteract the Iranian influence in the conflict. Moscow, which views Iran as key to resolving the crisis, said it will note Israeli interests.
When the two leaders met in Sochi on Wednesday, Netanyahu told Putin that any peace deal in Syria must entail the full withdrawal of any Iranian forces from the area.
"Iran is already well on its way to controlling Iraq, Yemen and to a large extent is already in practice in control of Lebanon," Reuters quoted Netanyahu as saying. "We cannot forget for a single minute that Iran threatens every day to annihilate Israel."
"Israel opposes Iran's continued entrenchment in Syria. We will be sure to defend ourselves with all means against this and any threat."...RT
Netanyahu to Putin: Iran must withdraw from Syria or Israel will ‘defend itself’
(1) Why isn’t Netanyahu talking to Assad? It’s his country.
ReplyDelete(2) Netanyahu has got a lot of balls giving Putin an ultimatum about a peace deal.
(3) Iran has never threatened Israel with annihilation and Israel knows it.
(4) ”After the Sochi meeting, Netanyahu flew back to Israel, where he is due to sit down with US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to discuss the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.” And dictate to Kushner to tell his father-in-law that Trump should back Israel in its fucking up a Syrian peace deal.
(5) Netanyahu thinks he can tell Trump how things are going to be, and with US backing.
(6) What if Trump and Putin got along together a lot better than Netanyahu realizes. Trump doesn’t care about Israel’s need to continue the illegal occupation of the Golan Heights. He wants to get rid of ISIS. Lavrov praised the Russia-Iran-Turkey troika “as the most effective way of resolving the Syrian crisis.” Which means Tillerson is on board.
MRW,
ReplyDeleteAll your points are spot on except the last. Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf dictatorships have been angling for war for a very long time. The US right will use Iran's near non-existent but legal civilian nuclear programme as an excuse to start a war. On the issue of Iran's near non-existent but legal civilian nuclear programme, Trump more than anyone, even Ted Cruz and the rest of the whacky extreme right GOPhers, still condemns the deal as stupid and dangerous. The US military may be underwhelmed by the intelligence of their new commander-in-chief but, as James Clapper made clear yesterday, there may be little to stop this unhinged president.
I read yesterday that Nixon ordered a nuclear strike on North Korea, but Kissinger apparently called the strike off, explaining to worried nuclear commanders that the prez was drunk. Trump allegedly doesn't drink...but he does prefer to talk chocolate cake rather than explain his bombing of Syria on ludicrous charges.
Israel taught the US how to use terror groups as proxies. Meanwhile they run - with no small irony - the world's largest concentration camp on the West Bank.
