India appears to be more divided than the US. There is also an economic component to it.

I've read about the free trade deals where Western companies - who are often subsidised by the government - are able to export food that they have made very cheaply through mechanised farming into India wiping out the local farmers because they can't compete. Indian neoliberal politicians get back handers from the Western corporations and praise the benefits of capitalism.
