Maths Quiz

Four men go into a cafe for breakfast and the bill comes to £30. But it's the birthday of one of the men so the other three guys say to him that as a treat they will pay for the breakfast.

As they walk out of the cafe, the owner says sorry, the bill was only £25, and gives them back £5 in pound coins. Amazed at his honesty, the three men who paid the bill, take £1 each and give the cafe owner £2 for a tip.

As they took back £1, they have now paid £9 each.

3 x £9 = £27 plus £2 given to the cafe owner equals £29

WHERE IS THE OTHER £1?

  1. just a play on words.

    "3 x £9 = £27 plus £2 given to the cafe owner equals £29" is incorrect.
    3 x 9 = 27 includes tip therefore each person has a £1 in pocket, so £27 + £3 = £30

  3. I thought it was clever. Well, I had to think about it, but I had a hunch you guys would get it quick.

  4. They have paid out 30-3=27 including the tip, so they've saved 3 (1 each) over what they would have paid if the price had not been changed. The "missing dollar" statement is just misdirection.

  8. Jeg3 got it. Or alternatively you could look at as the bill was 25, and they left 2 for a tip so 25+2=27. And 27/3=9 a piece. The orginal wording went the wrong way, instead of 3×9=27 then *plus* 2 is 29, it should have been 3×9=27 then minus 2=25 to get to the original bill price. Because they're divying up 5, so 2+3=5 would be the relevant info, 3-2=1 is irrelevant, a clever bait and switch. Does make you think though.
