I had similar thoughts perusing Risen's article at The Intercept.

  1. Tom they all have to stick to the script of "Russia!" as I dont see any other defense they can employ with a prosecutor's discretion or potentially a jury... they have to stick to the story that they were acting in good faith... this was Strock's mo this week... "bias? I was not biased..." (implying constantly that he was acting in good faith... blah, blah..)

So Rosenstein has to issue some sort of indictment of Russians as he was apparently one who signed off on a phony FISA application(s)... "hey! I was just going after Russian spies look I just indicted a bunch of them!"

    http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/371162-memo-shows-rosenstein-approved-application-to-extend-surveillance-to

Rosenstein in recent Congress questioning got VERY defensive and heated to point out he only signed off on "an EXTENSION" of the surveillance and he did not approve the original application (he wasnt there yet back then...) so you can see why he is getting pissed as he probably feels he is left holding the bag by the actual criminals...

Sundance has a good one out this weekend, it all will eventually go back to the big crime committed which was the illegal surveillance on the GOP and Trump campaign ... people will go to jail for that it just is a matter how high up the chain the charges will go... GOP probably has Obama himself as the highest potential target if supported by evidence...

the illegal surveillance goes back to at least 2015 well before Trump even announced...

  2. What if Trump goes over there and makes a deal to straighten all this out with Putin? Putin orders complete Russian cooperation?

Where does that leave Rosenstein then having signed off on a fraudulent/illegal FISA warrant?

Rosenstein has to get some sort of indictment filed before that might happen or it would more look like he was in on it...

  3. Right. Trumpgate and Russiagate have become politicized to the degree that the country is polarized around it, and the two sides are living in different perspectival "realities."

One side sees an illegitimate president that is the pawn of an evil dictator, while the other side sees a soft coup to remove the democratically elected president from office in a way that the US deep state has exhibited a long history of abroad.

There's no possibility of this ending in a conclusion rationally arrived at based on logical reasoning and evidence.

The US is in a soft civil war and has been building at least since the 60s and is traceable to Reconstruction, if not the founding of the US itself. The Civil War never really ended. For awhile that meant regional differences that were exploited politically, e.g., Nixon's Southern strategy, but now it has gone viral and it's no longer regional.

I don't mean to imply that this is fundamentally about a single issue, only that political divisiveness is not new to America. It was baked in and began with the founding of the republic. See the link below about Washington's warning.

Now the factions are now aligned against each other on the political battlefield based different perceptions of social, political, and economic liberalism relative to traditionalism.

This dialectic is complex and developing but it can be viewed in terms of two parties contending for power, and two major factions within the parties contending for control of the party.

Good summary of George Washington's views based on his experience. Americans, especially, should read this. It's relatively short. But it applies to parties and political factionalism everywhere, so it is of significance for all.

  4. I think Trump GOP is using timing to energize his base for this November... big risk in a first mid-term is that your base will be lethargic...

I can tell you Trump MAGA base is foaming at the mouth about all of this and will show up in droves in November... it is 24/7 on Fox and ratings are soaring...

  5. BTW, George Washington's Farewell AddressGeorge Washington's Farewell Address is worth a read.

GW was the only independent president the US has had since.

With the caveat that both parties and the factions within them represent pretty much the same interests.

The main difference is which factions of the elite they are aligned with. Same with the intra-party factions.

Hey, campaigns are costly and the $ has to come from somewhere. The elites just happen to be the folks with $. What's a politician going to do?
