Traditionalism is on the rise and it's taking a bite out of liberalism. This wave is not unique to Hungary.
In an annual speech to ethnic Hungarians in Baile Tusnad in neighboring Romania, Orban portrayed the 2019 European parliamentary vote as decisive for the future of Europe.
He said the Western political “elite” of the EU had failed to protect the bloc from Muslim immigration and it was time for them to go. “The European elite is visibly nervous,” Orban told hundreds of cheering supporters.
“Their big goal to transform Europe, to ship it into a post-Christian era, and into an era when nations disappear - this process could be undermined in the European elections. And it is our elementary interest to stop this transformation.”...
“Christian democracy is not liberal...It is illiberal, if you like,” Orban said....The historical dialectic chugs along.

The best way to stop the flow of refugees is to stop creating refugees. Stop supporting military and economic wars.
ReplyDeleteEvery war of aggression creates refugees. The U.S. war on Vietnam brought 1.3 million Vietnamese refugees to the USA. Most settled in California (39 percent), Texas (13 percent), Washington State (4%) and Florida (4%). Vietnamese represent the sixth largest immigrant group in the USA.
Why?
War, both military and economic. The USA had no massive influx of refugees from Mexico and Central America before NAFTA (Jan 1994) and CAFTA (Oct 2012).
Europe had no massive influx of refugees from Africa and the Middle East until NATO destroyed Libya, and nearly destroyed Syria and Iraq.
Again, the best way to stop the flow of refugees is to stop creating the flow.
Stay out of their country, and they’ll stay out of yours.
Konrad has a point. On the other hand it's not just the West that is interfering in Syria etc: so so Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, you name it. Plus if there was no interference at all, and the Syria civil war was just hand to hand and house by house fighting with no hi-tech weaponry, it might have been almost equally bloody.
ReplyDeleteKonrad, well put.
ReplyDeleteBTW, all that I said above about civilizational conflict comes together in MENA, where these civilization are all now engaged and some in conflict.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the Hebrew people had their own ancient civilization, which has now become Judaism as the remnant of the original twelve tribes after ten tribes were lost.
But that remnant is tiny proportionally, although its global influence is disproportionate to its small numbers. This can be taken into account by called Western civilization Judaeo-Christian. The four pillars of Western civilization are said to be Judaeo-Christian religious tradition, Greek philosophy, Roman law and organization, and model science.
Anyway, it is interesting that all this is converging at a point where the "end times" have been prophesied. Of course, that prophecy could be self-fulfilling as different cohort that believe it try to arrange the conditions for it to happen in their lifetime.
Stopping war is of course a great idea, far left and right both agree wholeheartedly. But it dodges the issue over the usefulness, necessity and future of the nation as a political arrangement. Current liberal thinking is that nations are basically a nuisance, unnecessary impediment to efficient trade and capital allocation and they promote racisms by their existence and ability to stop individuals from their pursuits.
ReplyDeleteAfter any decades of experience and reflection, I have come to the conclusion that we should be idealistic with regard to aspiration and realistic with regard to analysis and planning.
ReplyDeleteMy further conclusion is that there will likely be "one world" as the liberal internationalists aspire to creating now, but it will take "500 years" to develop, since humanity as a way to evolve to support the more universal level of collective consciousness including collective feeling needed to support it.
Right now humanity is still very much in the tribal stages, with nations being the aggregation of tribes with similar heritage, language, and customs. Trying to force internationalism and reduce the influence of the nation state that evolved over time for a purpose that still exists is foolhardy and it will end badly for those attempting this, and possibly that bad ending will also involve all.
But that is the way the historical dialectic works when driven by conflict that becomes overt. Free inquiry, informed debate, the rule of law rather than man, and compromise where called for were developed to circumvent this eventuality, but …..
Of course, that prophecy could be self-fulfilling as different cohort that believe it try to arrange the conditions for it to happen in their lifetime. Tom Hickey
ReplyDeleteFrom ignorance of the Old Testament since:
Alas, you who are longing for the day of the Lord,
For what purpose will the day of the Lord be to you?
It will be darkness and not light;
As when a man flees from a lion
And a bear meets him,
Or goes home, leans his hand against the wall
And a snake bites him.
Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light,
Even gloom with no brightness in it?
“I hate, I reject your festivals,
Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.
“Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them;
And I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlings.
“Take away from Me the noise of your songs;
I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.
“But let justice roll down like waters
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Amos 5:18-24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Instead, Bible believers should seek justice and righteousness, not defend, as some do, injustice.
