Young people who are unlikely to be seriously affected by Covid-19 should be allowed to “get on with their lives” and the case for so-called “herd immunity” must be revisited, a Scots public health expert has said

Some young people are not getting better
As case counts among young people rise, Daniel and others in their 20s want to share stories of the wreckage Covid-19 has wrought in their lives.
Those patients can potentially experience permanent lung damage, including scarring and reduced lower respiratory capacity.

It's people who think those two things are equivalent that are the problem, when it's millions to one.
ReplyDeleteWe don't stop PE for the out of shape kid with asthma do we.
Or perhaps the "Equality of Outcome" people think we should?
As the experts say the impact of Covid on the young is about one in a million, whereas the impact of flu on the young is about five in a million.
ReplyDeleteFlu is far more dangerous to younger people than Covid. Yet we never shut the schools down for flu.
When you live in a society that refuses to accept risk, you stop living.

ReplyDelete“CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are investigating a national outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI).”
Wow, did not know obesity was contagious. Yesterday I find out, here, that drunk driving was contagious :(
ReplyDeleteAlso, in a sane society herd immunity (I personally prefer the phrase "population immunity") is achieved thru vaccination.
US deaths from the coronavirus nearing 160,000, over 60,000 now hospitalized, 100s of thousands with debilitating medical conditions... "It is what it is," says the grotesque orange man in the White House.

Rationality.

There has been no successful vaccinations against a coronavirus. The flu kills 500,000 a season with a vaccination available.
"Wait for the vaccine" is like waiting for Godot
"100s of thousands with debilitating medical conditions"
ReplyDeleteWhere? How many more than after a run of flu or other nasty virus (measles outbreaks from all those anti-vax nutters for example).
"There has been no successful vaccinations against a coronavirus. "
ReplyDeleteYeah, these coronavirhus's can be a bitch.
You know why we are behind the curve with these bitch viruses? Governments, especially the US, drastically cut research funding following SARS and MERS when they should have ramped up. Fools.
"The flu kills 500,000 a season with a dravaccination available."
Last fall, my 91-yr-old father got his flu shots.
(You know, my father never had the opportunity to go school. Life after WW2 was hard in Greece; he had no choice but to work toiling the fields as a boy. Good man my father; lots of common sense :) )
OK, got to get started with the math this morning before I go see my parents. These math problems don't get done by themselves you know :(
Closing schools is much more about the kids bringing home the virus to their parents and grandparents, and the teachers. Not so much the kids themselves.
ReplyDelete“Screw the children!”
ReplyDelete“Man the lifeboats! women and children last!”
If your chosen profession is K-12 education and you don’t want to be around children you need to go find a new career...
ReplyDeleteThe irony of seeing obese people wearing masks. If you're so worried about dying, maybe you shouldn't weigh 300+ pounds.
ReplyDeleteAll the comments are still missing the point of the abysmal governments responses. Lockdowns inevitable due to the need to protect the hospitals from being overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteNo use moaning about it, when the suggestions will do the same thing.
Thanks Peter I will be sure to tell my wife that her wearing a mask because she has MS is her own fault.
ReplyDeleteIt takes many years for anyone to become morbidly obese. 6 months ago fat folks had no idea of Covid 19, and then no idea that they would soon have such risks. The pandemic may finally create a serious push towards them unweighting. Time will tell if the virus doesn't get them first.
ReplyDeleteWell I suppose the young could be systematically drafted to attend Camp Covids and allowed to leave when they pose no threat to anybody else. Somehow I doubt they'll be up for that preferring to whine!
