KV - Is the US a sore loser?
Any decent country will spend a fair amount of money on its children's education, and that includes sports.
Also China having 4-to-5 times the population of the U.S. Bigger selection.
India is another story. Only sport they're really interested in is cricket. They could have 10 billion more people and it may just get them another medal or two, but that's it. All their athletic/sports talent is in cricket.

Athletics: high prestige, low productivity
