Is NATO Membership for Finland and Sweden a Bad Idea? (Yes, it increases the probability of the US being nuked, with no corresponding benefit to either the US or NATO)

ReplyDeleteI don't disagree with Larry C. Johnson, except that Russians have proven themselves to be selfless and stupid. They'll sacrifice themselves for whoever is in power in Moscow.
ReplyDeleteAs cannon fodder, they behave like Asians.
But that is all in the past. With a nuclear deterrent, old-fashioned wars of conquest ought to be over and done with. Cannon fodder replaced by vapourized civilian populations.
If Finland doesn't have nukes on its soil, why attack it?
ReplyDeleteAlthough Finland gave up neutrality, it remains in a defensive posture.
That is another reason for Russia not to attack.
Finally, why does Russia see European nuke launchers as an existential threat, when they have launchers in the far east which cannot be destroyed from Europe or North America. Their retaliatory potential remains intact.
or maybe the Russians realized they'd been pushed into a corner. If they do nothing, Ukraine gets further integrated into Nato (a defacto member, but a de jure non-member is perfect for causing trouble to Russia. It's a layer of insulation against a direct attack on nato). So they had a choice, prevent Ukraine and get Finland, or I suppose you could prevent Finland but then you'd still have the Ukraine problem, so they picked the far more important one.. This was foreseeable, it's been talked about since pretty much day 1 of the war, so the Russians obviously have thought about it.
ReplyDeleteI know nothing, but I'd have preferred to see Russia just mobilize and straight up say, "no more new nato countries on our border." and make good on it. But obviously making good on that is a *very* difficult thing to do. But you probably can't make a legal case on that, soo.. blah.
What would it take to dismantle NATO?
ReplyDeleteWhat would it take to dismantle NATO?
ReplyDeleteLikely it would be the result of political change, or fear of it on the part of the ruling elite. Several European "right" parties are advocating withdrawing from NATO and their vote share is increasing.
The US and UK are unstable politically too.
Could see even some "regime change" in the West in the near future, especially if Western economies go south.
