About one in five workers around the globe, particularly employees in the Middle East, Latin America and Asia, telecommute frequently and nearly 10 percent work from home every day, according to a new Ipsos/Reuters poll.
Telecommuting is particularly popular in India where more than half of workers were most likely to be toiling from home, followed by 34 percent in Indonesia, 30 percent in Mexico and slightly less in Argentina, South Africa and Turkey.Read it at The Huffington Post

Building costs had/have become just too high.
Property speculation drove prices up, and even today with the too high petroleum costs, cost for construction are just too high. Due to fuel costs... (and btw, if we can ever get petro back down to $25, RE prices are going to go down with it and then even more RE loans are going to be under water)
So companies to the extent feasible just manage around this and let folks telecommute. Then they dont need as much square feet of office space....
FIRE are their own worst enemy.
