Alverez is not a nuclear engineer or a waste expert of any kind but a "energy analyst" who specializes in promoted unreliable low energy density renewables only i.e. a nuclear competitor and a poor one at that (see Tom Murphy on grid level storage scaling needed for intermittent sources).
Rumors about a possible collapse of the fuel rod cooling pool started way back in march of 2011 right after the meltdowns along with the incorrect claims that the pool had lost all water.
I believe the origin of the myths started with Sorcha Faal the Russian disinfomation specialist.
Why? Russia is now supply the Japanese with huge amount of coal and natural gas and various other geopolitical reasons going back to the Japanese- Russian war. As Counterpunch and others have documented most of green lobbies are in fact funded by Natural Gas companies and other fossil fuel interest aka Greenwashed frontgroups.
A good example is the attack on fracking over earthquakes. Because of the large markets for Natural Gas and shale oil the Fossil companies know that that hydrofracking essentially can't be killed but what will a highly regulated use of hydrofracking lead to? It will kill advanced Geothermal which also uses hydrofracking. What's actually dangerous about hydrofracking has nothing to do with earthquakes but water contamination. So all the Green groups have done is killed an actually viable renewables option and this just one of hundred of examples of greens getting duped as they are the left fist countergang of the the Fossils Cartel.
I suggest you read what Jim Hanson, James Lovelock say regarding nuclear power i.e. real scientists.
