"As always, follow the money."

So true.

Tom, your thoughts on this one (seems at least tangentially related)

How Corporate Moderates Created the Social Security Act (...And Then Tried to Undermine It Later) is by
G. William Domhoff, wh is the go-to guy on who rules America.

It's not surprising that moderate corporatists backed SS and other New Deal programs, for two reasons.

First. during the Depression socio-economic issues were to the fore and the threat of socialism was regarded as real. Few realize that in similar circumstances in late 19th c. Europe conservative Otto von Bismarck launched the welfare state to blunt the possibility of social unrest without the need for political repression.

Secondly, nothing happens politically without at least some of the oligarchs on board with it. Some actually have a sense of social responsibility and also know that they profit from a society in which the social fabric is strong.

Seem like "fixed income" sorts?

Thanks Tom, always good insight from you and your replies lead to other discoveries. Much appreciated! Helps me understand how we got here.

Tom

I am reminded of a scene from one of the Rush Hour movies with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan where Tuckers character is going on this diatribe about how if you follow any crime syndicate deep enough you will end up at some rich, fat white guy. Sometimes the truth is only allowed to be spoken in comedic situations

The difference between the criminal class and the upper class is only class and privilege. Both classes believe that the law doesn't apply to them but only the upper class is powerful enough for that to be true of them. They can pretty much bank on only being fined and never having to do time, no matter what.
