Emerging countries are developing, and already developed countries are stagnating. Attitudes and expectations reflect this. Lots of charts.

Ah the illusions of growth and social mobility. Sure they think 5 bill people can get up to the living standards of last 2 decades in developed nations, and they would be wrong (unless some dramatic changes happen). But we tend to think about the future in terms of our most immediate past experiences.

Everybody wants a piece of the cake, but if you think the cake is shrinking you also have to logically come to the conclussion that your chances of getting a piece of the cake are lower. So it's better to think that the cake is growing, not shrinking and extrapolate the immediate past into the future (because that's how human rolls). Then the outcome of such studies are obvious.

On th other side, there are some things that never change, like this one: "Success in life is determined by forces outside our control", USA still believes in the american dream & self-made individual theme punctuating the highest in disagreement eith the statement, just second to (sic) Venezuela.
