Democrats Follow Bernie Sanders' Lead on Single-Payer — Aaron Mate interviews Adam Gaffney

Well, what Clinton said will never, ever happen is now looking more and more possible. A number of prominent Democrats are lining up behind it, Sanders' bill for single-payer. Last week, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris jumped on board. Now, Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are signing on as well. Bernie Sanders is set to unveil his Medicare for All Bill on Wednesday. Adam Gaffney is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a member of Physicians for a National Health Program....

Trump wants single payer. Dems want single payer. A few Republicans want single payer. The progressive wing of Dems want to oppose Trump and resist blowing their opportunity because... whatever.

Medicare for all is the only rational health care system. We pay about twice what other industrialized countries spend with worse outcomes. But you know this will be another of Hillary's ponies, impossible since it costs too much money. Funny though we are already paying for this far too expensive lousy system.

Dems don't want single payer, they want to attack REPs without losing campaign donations from insurers and pharma.

Outcomes in order of probability:

1: Much ado and nothing changes. (Woo Hoo - we saved ExtortionCare!)

2: Increased public subsidies to private insurers. (Woo Hoo - we saved ExtortionCare!)

Like Hillary said - "it will never happen".

Again, pass the popcorn.

This is another fight to the finish, this one not so much over health care policy as for the soul of the Democratic Party.

Reason requires morality. The latter is in short supply.

Just talked to my broker in Maryland....

Maryland small group employer plan, female, aged 64, $6500 annual deductible: $905/mo premium....

Trump's $4000 annual credit looks like is not going to cut it.... it's probably still too low

$17,300 buys the right to have access to health care. Insurance has to be the best business model going (after war, of course).

Matt Franko said...

Well just have govt provide a $17,300 annual credit to a 64 yo and if you live in Maryland you get access to Johns Hopkins which is world class care...

It's only munnie...

Or cut out the insurance companies and spend $9k on actual care. This is a no-brainer.

That quote from my broker was through CareFirst which is a nonprofit insurer in the state of Maryland... they have to by law disgorge 80% of their premium revenue on reimbursement for care and leaving only 20% maximum for overhead and they don't make any money they are a nonprofit so they don't make any money

Fully subsidized by the government, the ACA is a small fraction of the insurance market. The government insures everyone over 65, so all insurers do is skim profit from the healthiest people.
