Trump vs the Establishment
I didn't know Trump gave this speech. I only came across it today and it is awesome! Did he mean it or was he just lying like most politicians? I can't help believe he meant it but the ruling elite overwhelmed him because he had hardly any truly independent politician he could choose for his cabinet. This version of his speech is with music and video edits which makes it more dramatic. It's old now but what a speech, no wonder the mainstream media are so scared of him as he called their game. No wonder they and the ruling elite wanted him impeached.

Exactly. Bernie would not have been able to do much better as left populist even though he is a political "insider." He would have been put in a box just like Trump has been.
Jill Stein would have been a joke. She would have been completely isolated.
Election of an outsider has shown the world that democracy in a America is a cruel joke. It's like all institutions in this respect and operates under Michel's Iron Law of Oligarch and Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy.
This also disconfirms methodological individualism as a realistic assumption. There are macro and meso level effects that supervene over micro.
Tom, Trump's weakness is that he doesn't believe in anything. Maybe you're right about Sanders being nullified, but he's a stronger man than Trump ever was.

Bernie may be a better man than Trump, but stronger? NOT. He caved badly and disappointed many that trusted him to be strong, including me. He's another loser.
Trump on the other hand identifies with being a winner. He will never give up and never quit. He may be an asshole in some respects but from the POV of taking on the establishment, I don't see anyone else on the political ring that is up to the job.
Dealing with national and global current affairs that are "continuously evolving," as they say, is a highly complicated game that is also complex, involving emergence and adaptation.
Trump may just be the best person for this job. There is no one else on the chessboard right now.
The really competent players aren't in the US or the West. Xi and Putin are way out out front. Trump seems to have a pretty good relationship with both of them, franking based on national interests and mutual interests. Of course, Trump faces massive opposition in acting on this from TPTB.
Trump may look to say stupid things and do stupid stuff, but I can understand most all of it in terms of a strategy involving jugging a lot of knives.
While I don't like Trump's style that's personal and I try not to let it cloud my vision of what is actually going on in terms of the many levels involved.
Don't sell Trump short just yet. He's clever and ruthless, which is just the qualities that make for success in a Darwinistic world.
Strong? He just chewed out a four star Marine Corps general. That's about as close to god as one can get. While Kelley was furious, he did not resign. Chalk up a win for DJT for showing POTUS is still in charge.

When you say Sanders caved badly, what are you referring to?
He knew that the Clinton machine undermined him and he endorsed her anyway and urged his supporters to vote for her as the best of the worst. Politics as usual.

Don't look to Sanders as a man of principle with the strength to stand up for his principles.
If you want another politician he is at least a decent one, with whom I agree on a number of issues but not all. And his failure to heed Stephanie Kelton meant that he would have failed economically out of the gate.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Sanders promised on national television in 2015 he'd support the Democratic candidate. When one gives their word they should keep it, and that's what he did.
A lot of Bernie supporters saw it as a sellout after the way that Bernie was treated. When you are backstabbed, your former promises are off.
A lot of these people, including me, saw Clinton as a worse choice than Trump. Some voted for Trump and others, including me either voted for a third party candidate, wrote someone in, or passed. I voted for Jill Stein.
Matt, I think that Bernie is a dyed in the wool socialist that believes in soaking the rich. Even if he listened to Kelton, his blinders would have prevented him from understanding, and if that didn't happen, then he would have blown her off for ideological reasons. He belongs to the loser wing of the progressive faction.
