A heartening documentary about poverty alleviation in China. Liberals say that the poverty line is set very low in China, and pass very harsh judgment by saying China is lying, but wealth is not created out of nowhere, and all countries have to work hard to produce it. Over the last 40 years China has gone from being one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the most advanced, and within the next 20 years these poor regions will hopefully be transformed too. These villagers do get welfare, but the emphasis is on education.
China has vowed to eradicate extreme poverty nationwide by the end of this year. The path to prosperity for all has been long and arduous and China is on the final stretch of the journey. But the last mile is always the hardest - so the government is forging new ways to reach its goal, including sending officials to live and work in the last pockets of poverty dotting the country. Who are they? What exactly do they do? And how do they go about the mammoth task of helping others climb out of poverty?

In China’s Idyllic Rural Resorts, Prosperity Is Only Skin-Deep by Sixth Tone (China)
BTW, the goal was to eliminate absolute poverty by 2020, which it is claimed was accomplished. But there is quite a way to go to reach overall prosperity. That's a goal China is shooting for decades from now.
It looks like a very difficult thing to put right if the land isn't very productive.
