An economics, investment, trading and policy blog with a focus on Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). We seek the truth, avoid the mainstream and are virulently anti-neoliberalism.
The REAL problem is that politics is almost always a Leisure Class activity. So they argue over manners, debate strategies for deceit, create theater over utterly unimportant manners, and inflate their self-importance by displays of absolute uselessness.
From where I sit, who is governor of New York is even less interesting that who is the reigning towel boy for the Jets. Because his replacement is institutionally incapable of being an actual improvement over the guy who just resigned.
On the other hand, the IPCC report was just released. Hard to imagine a subject more important or difficult. And because energy consumption is actually a basic survival need, climate change is the furthest thing possible from a Leisure Class problem. But watch the political class treat it like one—conferences, more papers, symbolic posturing. And of course the folks who believe themselves serious actors will wonder why we just don't outlaw climate change.
Veblen explained why the folks dedicated to displays of waste could never bring about social progress in 1899. It has gotten a whole lot worse since then.

Where would the leisure class be without the chattering classes obsessing over them?
If I were to speak my mind as to what should be done with the leisure class, I'd be labelled a DVE.
Guy McPherson is controversial, but here he is dissecting the IPCC report:
Science Update: The Sixth IPCC Report
Serious document, yet it still contains generous amounts of pretense.
Jon I think a female is going in there to replace Cuomo… see what happens…
