Since Russia has an open offer for a Russian passport (citizenship) to all in the Donbas that want it, it is doubtful that it would reflect so poorly on him that he would be at political risk. Moreover, Russia has no actual need for the Donbas territory any more than any other Ukrainian territory. So I would say it is definitely at option at this point. Of course, he has other options, too, claiming R2P against genocide and recognizing the insurgent republics and coming to their aid when they request are two of them. Russians plan carefully in advance and have all this gamed out, I am quite sure.
Putin is already painted as the "aggressor" ('killer"), so that doesn't matter.
This is a game among the US, Russia, and Europe, with Europe holding the short end of the stick. In a worst case scenario, Russia completely wipes out continental Europe and the UK. The best case scenario, Europe is hobbled economically and become a colony of the US instead of a vassal. European leaders know this, of course. This is why a new security architecture is so vital to them.
The only condition that will cause Russia to enter Ukraine is Ukraine forces attacking Russian citizens. That would happen only after a clear Ukie invasion of Donbass in violation of the Minsk Agreement and a breaking of the ceasefire.
The US plan to draw Russia into a trap is failing. Russia is onto it.
Biden is so far out on a limb right now he is practically begging Putin to invade.
Maybe because Democrats were asleep at the switch for Crimea they are overcompensating this time … don’t want to be accused of being blindsided again so they are continuously saying Russia is going to invade the next day…. Won’t look as incompetent…

What if Putin did nothing and allowed the Ukies to subjugate Donbass?

Putin has ordered government to prepare for those who choose to go to Russia. But no numbers I have seen so far.

The Ukrainian military will shell civilian areas - just like last time. It's sort of unavoidable in urban areas.
