Reuters — Commando dies in U.S. raid in Yemen, first military op OK'd by Trump

A U.S. commando died and three others were wounded a deadly dawn raid on the al Qaeda militant group in southern Yemen on Sunday, which was the first military operation authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The U.S. military said 14 militants died in the attack on a powerful al Qaeda branch that has been a frequent target of U.S. drone strikes. Medics at the scene, however, said around 30 people, including 10 women and children, were killed....

"However, the article also glosses over the complaints that Green Berets have made about the Timber Sycamore program in which “moderate” rebels actually turn out to be Jihadists." When confronted with this story, Liz Sly of the Washington Post commented: but those are liberal and secular Jihadis, no?

Liz Sly doesn't realize that "liberal and secular Jihadis" is an oxymoron. She and the Washington Post show the depths of ignorance in which the US mainstream is mired. It would be laughable if it were not so serious.

At the beginning of the Iraq War, the Bushies didn't understand the difference between Sunni and Shia Islam. Same with the canard that Iran is the major exporter of terrorism when the jihadis of all stripes are funded and supported by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which are Wahhabi and Salafi states. These are Sunni factions rather than Shia. They are enemies of Iran, as is Saudi Arabia, and Qatar and Israel, who are allied against Iran and using jihadis as proxies in conjunction with the US, UK and EU.

The budget for Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla., which dispatches elite troops around the world, jumped to $10 billion in the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30, from $2.2 billion in 2001. Congress has doubled the command to nearly 70,000 people this year, from 33,000 in fiscal 2001. The Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force provide further funding.

Navy SEALs and Army Green Berets, for example, are stationed in the Baltics, training elite troops from Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia for the type of proxy warfare Russia has conducted in the Crimea and eastern Ukraine.

But the vast majority of special-operations missions involve coaxing and coaching foreign forces to combat extremists the U.S. considers threats.
