With all this in mind, it’s hard to fathom just what the EU hopes to gain by pushing for full Ukranian independence and its eventual inclusion into the Union and Nato — apart from, of course, alienating arguably its most strategically vital trading partner. Is it just following orders from Washington whose goals, according to former US Assistant Treasury Secretary Paul Craig Roberts, are three-fold: to open up the Ukraine to looting by Western bankers and corporations; to establish US missile bases on Russia’s border with Ukraine and to deprive Russia of its Black Sea naval base and military industries in eastern Ukraine.
