Elizabeth Prezza — Trump Quietly Hires a Hardcore Anti-Abortion Crusader, Christian Right Delivers Heavy Applause

Forget about Bernie fans supporting Trump. He is turning hard right to secure the base before tacking to capture the center. But Trump had already begun this strategy with his promising to appoint and Alito clone to SCOTUS, cozying with Ben Carson, and including Mario Rubio, Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin on his leaked VP shortlist. These are deal killers for progressives.

In addition, the ones that paying closer attention realized that Trumps close political advisers are Roger Stone and Paul Manafort. Now they will be joined by John Mashburn as campaign’s policy director.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the prominent anti-choice organization Susan B. Anthony List, heralded the move as an “excellent hire, especially for the pro-life movement and our legislative priorities.”…
“If elected, no doubt John Mashburn will serve you well as you fulfill your campaign promises to defund Planned Parenthood, advance and sign into law the popular Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and appoint Justices to the bench who will protect and defend the Constitution,” Dannenfelser wrote.
Progressives remember all too well how they got taken in by Obama's campaign rhetoric only to be shocked by his appointment in quick succession of Rahm Emmanuel as Chief of White House Staff, Larry Summers as Chief Economic Advisor, and Tim Geithner as Secretary of the Treasury. They were further disillusioned by the appointment of Hillary Clinton to be Secretary of State, as well as the retention of Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense.

It's difficult to see how Trump could pivot enough to the center to attract many Bernie supporters without losing his right wing base. The dilemma Trump faces is that he cannot win without that base and he may not be able to win with it.

Who leaked it? Or was it disinfo put out by the #nevertrump crowd?

Trump sold out to Sheldon Adelson to the tune of $100 million.

Trump's main selling point was that he was too rich to be bought. Now he has been bought.

This is going to be a depressing election.

MRW it was Ben Carson, who is advising Trump.

It is Trump or Hilary.

Hillary is a known (long detained track record), Trumps an unknown (never served in public office and has no track record or experience).

The choice is between the devil we know and the devil we don't know, but are getting to know through his initial hires, which are the only behavioral tells at this point. What Trump says contains something for everyone and it is difficult to see how it could be organized into a governing policy and strategy.

Correction: Hillary is a known (long DETAILED track record)

Trump is now a known because he has sold his soul to Sheldon Adelson, and Adelson is a known.

Do we want to be ruled by an oligarch like Adelson, or do we want to be ruled by an oligarch like Haim Saban? Does it even make any difference which oligarchs rule us?

Hillary is a fucking train wreck. Trump is miles better than her (not perfect)when it comes to working men and women. Yes we know where she stands, but so do we with Trump. Those who think his broad coalition of associations are going to wag this alpha dog couldn't be more wrong. Trump will do what he says he's going to do, and the Adelson's of the world, if they expect a Trump puppet, will be sorely disappointed. And on the abortion front, I hope he goes hard right, although I don't think he will.

This was FDR's New Deal Treasury Sec. Because Obama didn't have the ability or knowledge to promote policies doesn't mean Trump won't drive his peons to carry out policy that conflicts with their ideology. In FDRs case, it actually strengthened his ability to pass bills because his treasury secretary knew how to make the policies palatable to political adversaries. Bill Clinton appointed Bob Rubin and Larry Summers to gut financial regulations. For better or worse, their positions enabled them to by-pass normal liberal opposition and safeguards and work across the aisle.
