Patrick Cockburn — Turkey, once the great hope of the Middle East, is left weak and unstable



This is a couple of days old but it is still highly relevant and explains the depth of the attempted coup. It also account for why Erdogan and his party are so ripped at the US. Had the coup succeeded, Fethullah Gülen would almost have certainly replaced Erdogan, and Erdogan would now be dead. Erdogan doubtlessly thinks that this plot was CIA run.
