Andrew Batson — What is the real driver of the Russian revanche?

Important. Another paradox of liberalism. Liberalism creates its own enemies.

Seems deliberate to me. They wanted a new cold war and they've succeeded. Russia's actions can be categorized as defensive, but this will change.

Still say they shouldn't have reneged on that gas deal .... straight downhill ever since...

Do you mean the US rejection of Exxon obtaining a waiver on Russia sanctions, Matt?

Europe is still buying Russian gas, right?

No back in 2006 or so when gas went to $13 they had a royalty deal with Ukraine for transport thru for some % of mcf and Russia reneged when it went to $13 because they thought the % worked out to too high a value in financial terms... same with Venezuela... bunch of imf loans are based on the financial flows from that Iirc Ukraine is in to them for $140B ....

So western financial interests want a regime in Ukraine that acknowledges those debts to the greatest extent...

It's a left characteristic to not keep commitments that is why they are incompetent for material rule... the left just can't rule from a material systems pov they renege as naturally as you breathe....

So this has put both Russia and Venezuela on the outs with the west which is more material systems oriented...

We should just put Russia on ice for a decade and then go back for a second look....

In the meantime they will become more self reliant as the post points out which probably is not a bad thing long term...
