George Monbiot - Lab-grown food will soon destroy farming – and save the planet

Scientists are replacing crops and livestock with food made from microbes and water. It may save humanity’s bacon

I'm more moderate than I thought I was. For one thing, I'm okay about 'champagne socialists', the more the better, I tell people.

Then right-wingers will then tell me that people like Michael Moore make millions out of their books, and I reply, great, the more profitable socialism is, the better.

I used to like the Off-Guardian, but if a corporation is behind someone, like say, averting climate change, then they get all anti about it. But what could be better than than there being very good profits to be made in averting climate disaster?

The Off-Guardian dislike George Monbiot, and I have not been happy with everything he has written in the past either, but if he ever supports something good, the Off-Guardian will still be against it.

They say he is the pro-corporate propagandist for fake green businesses. But I know George Monbiot is a pretty genuine and decent guy, even if he has infuriated me oftentimes.

Anyway, the Off-Guardian lost it with this article by George Monbiot today, and it's because the large corporations are backing this new type of food. But we will have to wait to see how healthy it really is, but it will be cruelty free, and will improve in time.

Anyway, it sounds like a good idea to me, although people fear it, thinking it will be dangerous the like GMO's were considered to be, so we will just have to see.

It sounds like a miracle, but no great technological leaps were required. In a commercial lab on the outskirts of Helsinki, I watched scientists turn water into food. Through a porthole in a metal tank, I could see a yellow froth churning. It’s a primordial soup of bacteria, taken from the soil and multiplied in the laboratory, using hydrogen extracted from water as its energy source. When the froth was siphoned through a tangle of pipes and squirted on to heated rollers, it turned into a rich yellow flour.
