Reuters — Pentagon says China military 'likely training for strikes' on U.S. targets

Ya think?

What to expect when provoking a dragon in its lair. Same with a bear. Provoking a dragon and a bear at that same time is, how would you say?
The report said that while the PLA had continued to extend operations, it was not clear what message Beijing was seeking to send by carrying out the flights “beyond a demonstration of improved capabilities.”
I'd say the message is loud and clear. But apparently the geniuses at the Pentagon know somethings I don't.

China has activated new intermediate and long-range missiles capable of precision strikes on medium and large warships.

Xinhua — Xi calls for strong military to defeat invading enemies, safeguard world peace

President Xi Jinping said Sunday China needs a strong military more than ever, urging building the People's Liberation Army (PLA) into world-class armed forces with confidence and capability to "defeat all invading enemies" and "safeguard world peace."…
"The world is not all at peace, and peace must be safeguarded," said Xi. "Today, we are closer to the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation than any other time in history, and we need to build a strong people's military more than any other time in history."...
Xi ordered the PLA to uphold combat effectiveness as the "sole and fundamental" standard for the military.
The PLA must focus on war preparedness and forge an elite and powerful force that is always "ready for fight, capable of combat, and sure to win," Xi said.

Qian Ruisha — Anti-ship rocket 'included in drills'

Shao Yongling, a professor of military strategy at the PLA Rocket Force Command College in Wuhan, Hubei province, said the DF-21D and DF-26 - which also made its debut at the parade - are probably the only two ballistic missiles capable of sinking aircraft carriers.
Western military experts were speculating that this was the case. This confirms it. The US will view it as a huge escalation.

Michael Lelyveld — China bars outside income for military

Breaking the legs of the MICC in China.
China's crackdown on corruption appears to have entered a new stage with a warning from President Xi Jinping that senior military officers will face punishment for any outside income.

On January 17, Xi told "high-ranking military officers" of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) that "any income other than their salaries is strictly forbidden," state media reported.…
The new restriction is a sign that the military will be a key front in Xi's anti-corruption campaign, which has already unsettled cadres of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with punishments of 232,000 officials last year, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspections (CCDI).
Xin Jinxing is serious about eradicating corruption. Narendra Modi needs to take a hint. The US? "Freedom, Democracy and Capitalism."

Col. C. Anthony Pfaff — What if two Chinese colonels think that warfare is changing, even if you don't?

In asking whether violence is of the nature of war, Col Pfaff seems to be ignorant of the Chinese tradition. My first teacher in martial arts and strategy was retired US Army (WWII) whose teacher was Chinese. I once asked him if he had ever had to fight. He said, "If I did, I would not be a master."

The main point of his teaching was to win without fighting, either through ruse or neutralizing the opponent. His fundamental principle was, "Be invisible to your enemies and transparent to your friends." A enemy is any one who seek to control you, and friends are those in one's circle of trust.

The training involved many things but the specifically martial aspect of it was learning to recognize the opponent's style, hence, his likely behavior, while being unreadable to the opponent, which is only possible through "empty mind."

Another point that he emphasized was understanding power. He said this is the most important thing in understanding the world.

The two Chinese colonels of whom Col. Pfaff speaks get this because it has been fundamental to Chinese martial arts and strategy since Sun Tzu, and it incorporates Taoist principles based on "doing with out doing" (wu wei).
