Roger Harris — U.S. Foments Regime Change in Nicaragua

In Noam Chomsky’s words, Nicaragua poses a threat of a good example to the US empire. Since Ortega’s return election victory in 2006, Nicaragua had achieved the following, according to NSCAG, despite being the second poorest country in the hemisphere:
  • Second highest economic growth rates and most stable economy in Central America.
  • Only country in the region producing 90% of the food it consumes.
  • Poverty and extreme poverty halved; country with the greatest reduction of extreme poverty.
  • Reaching the UN Millennium Development Goal of cutting malnutrition by half.
  • Free basic healthcare and education.
  • Illiteracy virtually eliminated, down from 36% in 2006.
  • Average economic growth of 5.2% for the past 5 years (IMF and the World Bank).
  • Safest country in Central America (UN Development Program) with one of the lowest crime rates in Latin America.
  • Highest level of gender equality in the Americas (World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2017).
  • Did not contribute to the migrant exodus to the US, unlike neighbouring Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
  • Unlike its neighbours, kept out the drug cartels and pioneered community policing.
The World Bank, IMF, and EU countries have certified Nicaragua for its effective use of international loans and grants. Funds were spent for the purposes they were given, not syphoned off into corruption....
Can't have that, can we.

Popular Resistance — Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega to Telesur: ‘The Coup Was Defeated’

Ortega says that the country has experienced extreme violence over the past several months at the hands of the “extreme right” of Nicaragua and U.S. elected officials who have always opposed the Sandinista revolution since it emerged in the 1980s.
The president went on to say that the violence is the fruit of U.S. officials who are working with poor paramilitaries within the country who want to knock down the Sandinistas.

Morning Star — Right-wing militias committing ‘acts of terrorism’ in an effort to destabilise Nicaragua, police say

A source in the city of Esteli told the Star: “Here in Esteli now the opposition are marking the houses of people identified as Sandinista.
“We're all taking what precautions we can, but I don't think the opposition are in the least interested in dialogue. They are determined not just to oust the government but to destroy the FSLN [Sandinista National Liberation Front].”...
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has been leading attempts to secure peace and stability in the country since violence erupted in April.

However, Nicaraguan right-wing extremists are seeking regime change with the government suspecting US interference after the Trump administration made a series of threats against Mr Ortega....
Back to death squads to combat "socialism"?

A downside of using terror as a tactic is that it leads to total surveillance and a police state.
Even the most freedom-loving people will choose security over liberty when their lives are on the line.

Andrew Korybko — 21st-Century Geopolitics of Central America: Local Characteristics and Integration Models

The research has now progressed to outlining the prevailing characteristics of Central America and listing the relevant regional integration organizations that its constituent countries are a part of. The first part of this chapter is divided among the four categories of economic, socio-political, military-security, and geopolitical commonalities which bind together Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, and is presented in a concise bullet-point format for easy reading, while the second half enumerates the pertinent multilateral organizations that that these six states have joined and elaborates a bit about each one. The point here is to emphasize the factors of convergence, some of which are historical and were already introduced in the previous chapter, which allow for one to speak about Central America as a distinct geopolitical landmass separate from its Northern and Southern neighbors.

As organized by sphere, here’s what the Central American states share in common, followed by a few germane geopolitical observations which will help reinforce the reader’s understanding of this region’s 21st-century geopolitical dynamics:
  • Economic
  • Socio-Political
  • Military-Security
  • Geopolitical
  • Regional Integration Organizations

Russia's Cooperation With Latin America to Counterbalance NATO Expansion

By pursuing defense cooperation with Latin American countries Russia will counterbalance NATO expansion in Eastern Europe, experts say.
During his recent Latin American tour Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu signed a number of important agreements strengthening military collaboration between Russia and Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.

In Caracas, the Russian and Venezuelan defense ministers discussed further development of military and military-technical cooperation and agreed on holding joint military drills, while in Managua, Shoigu signed an agreement allowing Russia's warships to enter Nicaragua's ports and ratified bilateral deals aimed against drug trafficking and organized crime. In Cuba, Russia's delegation and its counterparts focused on maritime cooperation issues as well as training of Cuban military servicemen in Russia. While discussing global and regional security issues, the authorities of the countries pledged their commitment to a just and polycentric world order and recognized Russia's efforts of establishing peace and stability in the world.

Experts stressed that the agreements signed by Sergey Shoigu and his counterparts will form the basis for strengthening Russia's positions in South American region and bolster mutually beneficial defense cooperation between the countries. According to analysts, the move is a response to NATO's further expansion in East Europe. The president of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Issues, Gen. Leonid Ivashov praised the course of Russia's Defense Ministry, stressing that while NATO is moving rapidly toward the Russian borders, Moscow should develop its own non-nuclear deterrence strategy, containing a potential Alliance's aggression.

Russia's Cooperation With Latin America to Counterbalance NATO Expansion

Needless to say, the governments of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are the US list for regime change.

Recalling history, when the US moved missiles into Turkey, Russia moved them into Cuba and the result was the Cuban missile crisis, the outcome of which is that both parties withdrew their missiles from each other's borders, but not before nearly causing a nuclear war that would have resulted in mutually assured destruction.
