IMHO, this the best analysis of the Russian military drawdown (not "withdrawal") from Syria.

Syrians can try to find some semblance of peace through partition, or they can continue fighting. Russia and the US have no intention of getting themselves involved in another quagmire. They are willing to keep meddling while Syrians suffer the consequences.

I have yet to see any solution to the crisis in the Middle East. The region is ruled through repression, by religious fanatics on one side and murderous secularists on the other. The best example for a way forward was attempted in Iraq, but its government was unable or unwilling to foster a reconciliation within that country. And so Iraq has split in three.

Maintaining arbitrary borders will cost more lives and suffering. But when have other people's lives mattered when it comes to doing what is expedient?
