This Western hype ... mostly American mainstream media hype, no?

Not really. The crazy has taken over the UK and much of Europe, too.

When I went to Russia, one of the experts travelling with us said, "Dont make the mistake of comparing Russia to the United States. You can only compare Russia to Europe."

From what I have read this applies to Moscow and St. Petersburg, where there is a lot of Western (European) influence and much less American influence. It applies much less to the rest of Russia, with the contrast increasing with the distance from those cities. For example, the Islamic influence increases toward the east. Moscow and St. Petersburg are near the Western border of Russia. They were also imperial cities influence by the Westernizing effort of Tsar Peter I called Peter the Great.

I spent three months there, all over the place including regions of the Caucasus where there were no roads to get into the villages. We had to haul our bags three miles up a hill with wild boars running around us.

Saker got it right in that article, imo. Russians are united by Mother Russia. Doesn’t matter what your religion is, or your language. Their first allegiance is to their village, then their country. They speak over 100 languages there in addition to Russian. So an area that speaks a Turkic language would also speak Russian, etc.

You’d never catch a Russian Jew saying, “Is it good for the Jews?” They dont think like that. It’s “Is is good for my village?” Then “Is it good for Russia?”

I was there when it was the USSR.
