Danny Sjursen — The U.S. Military: Proud Owners of One-Third of Syria

Where the oil is.
Predictions are a tricky thing, but here’s one: Within a few years, America will gain nothing, and Washington will come to regret what turned into a messy, prolonged excursion in Syria. Pundits will wonder how it happened though it will have seemed preordained, just another unavoidable foreign policy disaster in an intractable region.
And this is the optimistic scenario.

Here are 17 tweets from 2013 to 2014, where Trump shows that he clearly understands that the Deep State is frothing at the mouth to destroy Syria.

Unfortunately, as POTUS, Trump has been swallowed up by the very swamp he promised to drain....
It's not like DJT doesn't realize this is a blunder as the strategists pointed out above. But he will do it anyway. He will pay a price with his base, but apparently he is assuming they will stick with him through thick and thin.

He may just bomb a bunch of stuff and leave ... a punitive strike... leave out the “nation building!” that we’ve gotten used to from the US either under Clinton or Bush2 or Obama...

Iow “dont do it again or we’ll be back to knock even more stuff down” type deal... we could take out the grid for Damascus and let them have fun rebuilding it for a while to keep them occupied...

The right doesn’t want all the nation building part of it... idt the right would have a big problem with a punitive strike by a coalition if it turns out they really used WMD...

Tom think the Gulf War 1 model where the coalition kicked Iraq’s ass and then just left them to deal with it.... no nation building...

Love the way Franko apologizes for Trump and completely ignore the 17 times Trump urged America NOT to go to war in Syria.

Wait a minute ... Franko IS Trump! Now it all makes perfect sense. He's faking out everyone here - 4D Chess indeed.

He may want US to sell more F-35s (“make money!”) so a real world demo vs. S-400 may make sense now for him vs. when he wasn’t POTUS...

I am beginning to think that Bolton got to DJT.

Bolton was reportedly visiting the WH regularly before his recent appointment as US National Security Adviser.

Bolton is known as extremely persuasive and it's quite probable that Trump has bought into Bolton vision, which is incorrectly characterized a neocon. He's not a neocon into "spreading freedom and democracy" or into nation building. He is war hawk whose bottom line is destroying potential enemies before they arise.

If this is so, it bodes evil. Let's hope that Trump has more sense.

“war hawk whose bottom line is destroying potential enemies before they arise.”

Or it’s payback we never properly settled the ‘83 Beirut Marine barracks bombing by Iran/Hezbollah don’t forget...

Or it’s unfinished GWOT business (that Bolton would have had helped develop) that Obama dropped the ball on...

iow it can appear (to someone who is not biased anti-war) as though both Iran and Syria have gotten off scot free in the GWOT... this probably does not sit well with a Bolton and probably doesnt sit well with a Trump either to an extent...

Plus in the Syria case I have a feeling Assad renenged on some agreements that were made as far as what he was supposed to do in support of the GWOT in order to stay... and has now fled into the arms of the Soviets again like his father did in the Cold War...
