Counter Current News — Massive Blow To Federal Reserve: Texas Introduces Bill To Recognize Gold & Silver as Legal Tender

The crazy is spreading.

It's not mentioned here but they want a balanced budget amendment, too, to bring prosperity to all that work hard to earn their money.

Moronism.

I have not been posting much on politics and global affairs of late. The crazy is even more rampant there, and the level of moronism astonishing. "What a revoltin' development" as Chester A Riley (played by William Bendix) used to say on "The Life of Riley." But this is not funny.

Where's Schiff? Where's Kyle Bass? Glenn Beck? All the rest of the gold bugs?

Suddenly the gold bugs are silent. The dollar bears, too. Remember, they all told us that massive central bank "money printing" was going to cause gold to go to $5,000 even $10,000 and ounce. That there would be inflation...even hyperinflation?

So what happened? Gold looks like death. Piece of shit.

And the dollar? Oh yeah, multi-year highs against just about every currency.

There is one thing that does concern me, however, and that is, when you start seeing pictures and commentary like this one (gold, death, etc) it might be time for a bounce. But other than a bounce, gold is crap.

Buffett blasts gold lovers

No, not Warren....Jimmy. It seems like none other than musician Jimmy Buffett understands the silliness of the gold lovers. Recently I was listening through his latest album, when the song "Useless but Important Information" came on. Admittedly, its not a terrific song, but Buffett had some interesting ideas about gold:

"...Gold all starts out in the ground
Till very clever men dig it up
Then wait, then they bury it again
Most comes from Africa and ends up in Fort Knox
Only gets its value from the guards and chains and locks...pretty rocks..."

Seems like this 67 year old singer/songwriter understands commodity price manipulation pretty well! If a guy with just a bachelors degree like Jimmy Buffett can understand this, why cant the gold bugs/Von Mises/Peter Schiffs/Ron Paul types of the world get it? Perhaps professional economics often does more harm than good?

Maybe its time to make "Margaritaville" the official MMT anthem ;)

Ira Sohn conference is underway: last year's big idea...buy gold

Well, the annual get together of that elite cadre of egotistical, clueless, financial bozos is underway again. No, I'm not talking about a JP Morgan board meeting, but rather, the Ira Sohn investment conference.

Last year's big idea? Buy gold. That worked out well, didn't it?

I wrote about it, here.

More cheap dogma from uninformed gold bugs

There's a column in today's (rag sheet) NY Post written a Seth Lipsky who attempts to distort the truth about the stock market's performance since 1971. That's when Nixon closed the gold window and the dollar lost all convertibility to gold. Actually, FDR took us off the gold standard domestically in 1933, making it illegal for Americans to own gold, while fixing the price of the metal at $35 per ounce, which is where it stayed for the next 38 years. Nixon's move merely removed the ability of foreigners to convert dollars to gold.

Anyway, this article uses all the usual, uniformed, gold bug trickery and distortion even as the author implores us that's it's not at all a trick.

He starts off by saying that if you divided the Dow by the price of gold (typical, stupid, unsophisticated gold-bug attempt at analysis), it is actually down when looking over the past four years. (Notice the small time sample.) Who cares if the nomimal "price" of the Dow more than doubled in that time? This guy says it's all a mirage and gold is making that clear.

While it's true that the Dow/gold ratio went from 9.3 in January 2009 to 8.47 now, if you start the comparison just ONE MONTH LATER, i.e. at the time of the fiscal stimulus, then the ratio went from 7 to 8.47. Clearly, a much different result. This is one of the problems with trying to argue with a very narrow and highly selective set of statistics.

Expanding the analysis, if you go back to 1971, when Nixon ended gold convertibility, the Dow/gold ratio did fall sharply for several years, until 1974. What was that about? It was about gold coming out of a situation where it had been fixed in price for 38 years. Naturally it shot up. In addition, nobody really owned any gold, so there was no one selling to mitigate the rise. However, by the time folks started buying gold around 1974 (still in relatively small quantities), the Dow/gold ratio was moving higher and the Dow's been in a bull market against gold ever since.

The other thing not mentioned in the Post article is that the Dow's nominal price level does not reflect its total return, which means taking into account the reinvestment of dividends. This is huge. Once you factor in reinvested dividends the stock market trounces gold. It's just another fact conveniently omitted by the gold bugs.

Lipsky continues by moving to gas prices, which he says went up not because of speculation or tight supply, but because the dollar was losing value. And here he tries to plainly pin this on Obama, even though he uses a quote from a speech Obama made back in 2008, before he was president. The dollar may have been losing value against gold at the time, but it was holding its own against a broad basket of currencies. The dollar Index, the very index that is so widely followed and cited by the gold bugs, has gone from 71 to 80 in the period from 2008 to today. The dollar has gone up, not down. They just say it's gone down and expect you to take them at their word.

That's the gist of it. Another misleading piece of crap commentary by an ideological goofball who makes his case easy enough for a second grader to debunk. It's laughable. This is not informed analysis, it's cheap dogma.

Even "money printing" is not inflationary!

Every one of the Austrian, hard money, gold bugs,' debt freaks,' arguments are being decimated left and right.

Yesterday I showed you how there has been NO correlation between the rise in Federal debt and interest rates. A couple of weeks ago I showed how the dollar has gone UP since the Fed embarked on all its extraordinary monetary measures, which added several trillion in new reserves.
Now take a look at this.

Here's REAL money printing--the Federal debt--which increased by 2000% since 1980. THAT'S money printing! And look at what the Consumer Price Index...IT WENT DOWN!

Yet the Debt Doomsday, money printing freaks will still stick to their wrong arguments.

Look at gold tank. Isn't it beautiful!!

Gold is tanking and the dollar is rallying sharply following the Fed meeting. This comes even though the Fed said it would continue its asset purchases and keep rates low for an extended period of time.

All the "debt-doomsday" people and "Fed debasing the dollar/causing inflation blah, blah, blah" people are wrong. Totally wrong.

Best of all is gold, which is getting crushed. This comes mainly on the news that JP Morgan is raising its dividend. Companes raising dividends (financial companies, to boot!), what's the reason for owning gold? There is none. Gold is a non-investment.

Next stop...$1200. Don't worry gold bugs, maybe it will stop there. If you're lucky. ;)

Hey gold bugs...what happened???

For the past week you had all these gold bugs and other "very smart people" telling us how the world is being "flooded with money" by the central banks and that the ECB's coming LTRO (II) would be another example that. Then the ECB does a larger than expected, 529 bln euro ($700 bln) and what happens? Gold tanks. Great call, gold bugs. Great call.

MMT had it right, once again! Central bank monetary operations are NOT inflationary.

The Fed cannot print money, even if it wanted to. Only the Federal Government can and it's currently "un-printing" money, as are nearly ALL governments of the industrialized nations of the world.

Good call, gold bugs...good call!
