The promising thing is that in the developing world distributed solutions are often more efficient, and therefore this sector of the global economy may be leading the way in decentralization. The economies of the developed world are centralized, and it is therefore more difficult for them to disengage from this model due to economic and social momentum.
Fusion is the future.
