Russian oligarchs lose up to $16 billion after Trump sanctions

Why use the frowning Vlad picture?  I would think Putin would be glad to see the Russian "oligarchs!" nemesis take a big hit like this no? He should be calling Trump to say thanks...

A stealth aircraft, scanned from above with look-down radar, would present a moving radar shadow against the fixed landscape below it, no?

So target the shadow, eh?

What were the realized loses. None? I thought so.

There might be some realized losses if the West confiscates Russian holdings in the West, but that just sends a signal to the ROW not to put $ where the US can reach them. It will accelerate de-dollarization.

You’d then have to shoot from above AA... ie air-to-air....

S-400 is surface-to-air system...

Tom,
so Putin’s oligarchs: “good!”

non-Putin oligarchs: “bad!”

????????

The "non-Putin oligarchs" are ones that transferred their ill-gotten goods to London. They are under indictment in Russia and the UK refuses to extradite them.

Russia is lining up a bunch of deals for S-400 so if US could obliterate one in Syria in a couple hours that might be then seen as bad for business...

“transferred their ill-gotten goods to London.”

GBP are always “in London”.... EUR are always “in EZ”....

If those guys sold oil or nat resources to U.K. and they paid in GBP it’s not like Vlad can “bring the money back to Russia!” or something...

Yes, there are associated costs. Russia has said that if the US strikes Russian military in Syria, Russia will strike the base or ship delivering the attack.

It's all gamed out with game theory.

In addition, Russia has pretty sophisticated electronics. Both Russia and China know that the US military is dependent on command and control using electronics and satellites. They have been developing countermeasures.

The Week
Russia is jamming U.S. drone signals in Syria, officials say

The RUB were laundered into GBP through a Latvian bank.

Tom Hickey said...

The point is that once funds denominated in RUB or CNY are converted (laundered) into USD or GBP, they are in that currency zone and subject to the rules of that zone. Governments can change the rules at will. RUB owned by the counterparty and remain in the RUB zone.

if a transaction in denominated in a currency like USD, GBP, then the currency remains in the issuer's currency zone. No laundry needed.

I’d assume our people know what they’re doing (technically....)

You could defeat the system without necessarily destroying it.... iow if we hit a bunch of stuff under S-400 protection then you would be “defeating” the S-400...

Still risk a response.

Russia has made is clear that it will impose costs.

Of course, that leads to escalation until someone folds or the nukes fly.
